The Costa del Sol is under a severe weather alert, as Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an Orange Warning for torrential rainfall, calling for immediate activation of regional emergency protocols across Malaga province.
The Orange Warning for rain, which signals an important risk to the public, is currently scheduled to remain active until 12am (midnight) on Thursday, November 6th. The heaviest downpours are expected to impact the Costa del Sol, the Guadalhorce Valley, and the Axarquia areas.
Regional government activates flood risk protocol
In direct response to the heightened risk, the Junta de Andalucia has activated its official Emergency Plan for Flood Risk in Andalucia (Peri), moving into the pre-emergency phase (Operational Situation 0) for the entire province of Malaga. This activation makes sure that emergency services, including 112 Andalucia, are fully coordinated to manage any potential incidents. Several local councils, including Torremolinos, have also activated their municipal emergency plans (PTEL) to prepare for local flooding and road issues.
Crucial safety advice issued
Authorities are strongly urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution during this period of severe weather. The official advice from the regional government is clear:
- Avoid unnecessary journeys during the peak rainfall period.
- Exercise extreme caution when driving or moving outdoors.
- Follow the alerts and advice issued by 112 Andalucia and local authorities.
Outlook: Conditions to improve by Thursday
While the warning remains active util Wednesday night, the forecast for Thursday, November 6th, shows plenty of improvement. Once the Orange Warning is lifted at midnight, the weather is expected to stabilise quickly.
Thursday’s forecast for Málaga and the Costa del Sol calls for partly sunny skies, with high temperatures reaching highs of 21ºC in parts and a low of 13ºC at night. The chance of rain is expected to drop dramatically to just 10 per cent during the day. So, torments ahead, and bliss to follow with good weather predicted for the weekend.
