MadridcTypeface:> Giant waves have swept dozens of people into the sea on Tenerife, including many tourists, leaving three dead and 15 injured, regional authorities on the Spanish holiday island have reported.
The newspaper Diario de Avisos reported on Sunday that three people died on Saturday in a “tragic day” off the coast of Tenerife. One of the fatalities was a 79-year-old Dutch woman, according to media reports. Authorities confirmed her nationality, but her exact age has not yet been verified.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Puerto de la Cruz, a town on the north coast of the Canary Island, when the force of the waves swept her and nine others into the water.
A second fatality was reported in Charco del Viento, about 15 kilometres west of Puerto La Cruz.Earlier on Saturday morning, a man’s body was pulled from the water off El Médano beach on the south coast. (DPA)
