A woman who travelled to Spain said she was left unimpressed by a popular city, branding it “smelly” and “awful.” She detailed her personal opinion about the holiday
A woman’s recent Spanish break left her feeling underwhelmed, despite the area being touted as a location of “hidden gems”. The woman, known on TikTok as girl_in_barcelona, shared her candid experience of visiting Alicante, Spain, in a video that has since been viewed thousands of times.
She had been advised to visit the popular holiday spot, but found it to be nothing more than “smelly” and “awful”, failing to see what all the fuss was about. While she conceded that the port was pleasant and there were some “cute” plazas, overall, she described her trip as a “disappointment.”
Despite acknowledging the beauty of the coast around Alicante, she couldn’t overlook her negative impressions of the city itself. Her video sparked a flurry of comments from viewers sharing their own thoughts on Alicante.
One user agreed with her sentiments, commenting: “Hated Alicante. Never again. Waste of money.” Another added: “I live here and, yes, Alicante is worse each year.”
In a humorous twist, a third commenter joked: “It’s awful there. The whole coast from Barcelona down and around Magaluf is awful. Best stay at home and let us who live here just suffer. We’ll be brave though and not complain.”
Meanwhile, a fourth was quick to praise the city, saying: “Alicante is so beautiful. Any city has horrible parts.” Someone else also chimed in with: “Alicante is beautiful. Every city has ugly places.”
If you’ve never visited Alicante previously, it’s an extremely popular holiday destination. It attracts millions of tourists each year thanks to its stunning beaches, historic landmarks such as Santa Barbara Castle and buzzing nightlife scene.
Additionally, it serves as a key entry point to the Costa Blanca area, and remains a favourite amongst overseas property purchasers. Despite the video suggesting the city appears somewhat neglected, not everyone shares this perspective.
Whilst certain districts might display evidence of limited development or dated buildings, the city centre, particularly the Old Town, typically bustles with life and visual appeal. Visitors will discover well-kept seafront walks and tourist zones here.
The destination provides both historical character and contemporary facilities, although viewpoints differ regarding its general atmosphere. This became evident from responses posted beneath the footage after the influencer’s September visit.

When someone suggested the woman had worked “hard” to produce such a critical video, she responded: “Not at all. I would have made a video to show how beautiful it was, if it was the case.”
She also acknowledged that everyone has different views, which was evident in the comments. One individual commented: “You’re joking, I loved it there. You can find badness anywhere.”
