Murcia is bracing for heavy rain this Friday, October 10, as Aemet has raised the alert to red for parts of the coast. Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón are expected to see intense rainfall, up to 60 litres in an hour and 180 litres over 12 hours.
A red alert signals extreme weather that can be dangerous to life and property. Residents are advised to stay informed, follow official guidance, and avoid unnecessary travel.

Thursday’s weather: Warming up to the storm
Thursday, October 9, sees yellow and orange warnings across much of the region, with up to 15 litres of rain per square metre in an hour. The heaviest showers will hit Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.
Temperatures are dropping too, with highs of just 19°C inland and 23°C on the coast.
Emergency plans in action
The regional government is taking the storm seriously. Delegate Francisco Lucas has called an urgent meeting, assuring residents that “all state resources are mobilised.” Regional president Fernando López Miras echoed the call for “maximum caution.”
In Murcia city, parks and playgrounds are closing as a precaution. Over 3,000 drains have been cleared to prevent flooding, and cleaning crews will be on standby.
Cartagena prepares
Cartagena has activated a pre-emergency phase. Residents are advised to keep drains clear, avoid parking in flood-prone areas, and steer clear of ramblas and watercourses. Police warn drivers to slow down, drive carefully, and maintain safe distances.
Public parks may close, and large trees could be cordoned off for safety.
Stay safe & stay updated
Everyone is encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and follow updates via local social media and the TuMurcia app, which provides real-time rainfall data. Drivers can also check the DGT’s interactive map for road conditions.
While Friday, October 10, is expected to bring the heaviest rain, showers and cloudy skies may continue into Saturday before conditions slowly improve.
