Gandia is ready to host the IV Feria de Montaña de la Safor, which this year returns to a dual venue format: the Teatre Serrano will host the fourth Mostra de Cinema de Muntanya on November 27 and 28, while the Plaza de Marxuquera will welcome the bulk of activities throughout the weekend.
The first deputy mayor and head of Environment, Sustainability and Climate Emergency, Alícia Izquierdo, highlighted that this edition “consolidates the Safor Mountain Fair as a benchmark for all those who love nature, sport, and the local territory.” She added that the programme “reinforces our commitment to environmental awareness, promoting physical activity, sustainable tourism, and the appreciation of our mountains. We invite the entire community to join in.”
A weekend full of activities and experiences
The fair’s offering has expanded to include ten guided excursions, seven interactive workshops, three thematic debates, and eleven presentations led by specialists and organisations from the hiking world. Visitors can also enjoy an open climbing wall and four documentary screenings focusing on natural spaces in the region and other mountainous areas.
Xavier Cervera, president of the Societat Excursionista de la Safor, which is organising the event this year, described it as “a great joy and responsibility, representing the highlight of mountaineering in the region.” Among the new features are a special double session of the film showcase with Piolet d’Or winners Silvia Vidal and Jordi Corominas, and the first climbing rally in Falconera.
Innovation and education
Daniel Muñoz, director general of Natural Environment, highlighted the fair’s growth, noting the participation of a firefighting helicopter and two specialised trucks demonstrating their operations to the public.
The fair will also feature the launch of the book El patrimonio subterráneo de Gandia, exploring local caves and underground ecosystems, and the debut of “Montenubistan”, an interactive space set up by the Mountain Sports Federation.
Thursday November 27 – Film showcase
The IV Safor Mountain Fair kicks off on Thursday at the Teatre Serrano with the opening of the IV MONEM film showcase at 6pm. Visitors can enjoy a photographic journey through the Khumbu region with Òscar Martí, followed by Alma de coral, a presentation by renowned alpinist Marc Toralles.
Friday November 28 – High-altitude adventures
On Friday, the spotlight remains on mountaineering. Silvia Vidal, Spain’s first female Piolet d’Or winner, presents Alaska. One step further at 6pm, before Jordi Corominas takes the stage at 7.30pm to share a lifetime of alpine adventures, moderated by Joan Quintana i Paredes.
Saturday November 29 – Outdoor activities and workshops
The weekend moves outdoors on Saturday, with a morning of guided hikes, fauna excursions, and visits to Morabit and Cova de les Meravelles (pre-registration required). As the fair opens, families can explore a climbing wall, children’s area, and a variety of workshops ranging from CPR training to knot-making and cyanotype printing. A spectacular demonstration by a fire-fighting helicopter adds to the excitement.
In the afternoon, presentations cover sustainable forestry, wildlife conservation, mountain photography, herbalism, and the pressing topic of climate change. The day concludes at 6pm with the launch of A la sombra de la tierra, a book exploring Gandia’s subterranean world.
Sunday November 30 – Adventure and exploration
Sunday continues with more outdoor adventures. The morning features the Falconera climbing rally, caving excursions, geological walks, and guided tours. From 11am to 1.30pm, visitors can enjoy book presentations, rural development talks, a Nordic walking workshop, and craft beer tasting.
A community lunch at 2.30pm offers a chance to refuel before the final afternoon of orienteering and mountain navigation workshops, with the fair closing at 4pm.
With such a varied programme, the IV Safor Mountain Fair offers something for everyone—whether you’re drawn to the thrill of climbing, the serenity of a guided hike, or the curiosity of environmental and cultural workshops, it promises a weekend that celebrates Gandia’s mountains and natural heritage.
