The Costa Blanca has been hit by mega storm Alice, leaving tourists stranded after several flights were diverted and cancelled.
The holiday hot spot, which is popular among sun seekers, was put on high alert as Spain braces for torrential rain and strong winds, with officials warning of ‘exceptional risk’.
Seven flights heading to Alicante-Elche airport were diverted on Friday, travel hub operator Aena said.
A graphic shared by flight tracking website Flighradar24 showed a number of planes circling Alicante airport as a result of travel disruptions.
The operator also said 12 flights were canceled on Friday due to the weather warning.
As for the airports of Valencia and Murcia, some flights have already suffered serious delays.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office has issued a warning for Britons planning to travel to Spain, warning of ‘severe’ weather conditions on its east coast.
AEMET, the Spanish weather agency, issued a red warning for heavy rain in the tourist city of Alicante and said it would take effect from Friday morning, but the worst of the storm is yet to come.
Other Mediterranean coastal regions are also expected to be affected, including the neighbouring province of Murcia and the Balearic Islands, with ‘very heavy and continuous rainfall’ expected until Monday, AEMET added.
Heavy rain began falling over eastern Spain on Wednesday evening and is expected to continue throughout the week.Telegraph/
