Denia is preparing for an exceptionally busy first half of December, shaped by both the Constitution long weekend and the start of the Christmas season. The overlap of these events means several of the town’s most popular markets will undergo temporary changes to their usual schedules and locations. Below, EWN explains all the adjustments, along with clear context on where each site is located to help both residents and visitors navigate the changes.
From Friday December 5 to Sunday December 14, calle de la Via will become the centre of Denia’s festive atmosphere. This central street, located a short walk from the main commercial district, will host the traditional Mercat de Nadal, an annual attraction that draws large crowds. Local traders, artisan stalls and Christmas-themed products will take over the area, accompanied by family activities and seasonal entertainment. The market opens on Friday December 5, coinciding with the official switch-on of Denia’s Christmas lights, one of the most popular events of the season.
Changes to the Friday fruit and vegetable market
The arrival of the Mercat de Nadal has a knock-on effect on the Friday fruit and vegetable market, which is normally set up in calle de la Via. To ensure it can continue operating without interruption, the market will be temporarily relocated —as has been done in previous years— to the streets surrounding the blue-zone car park in calle Manuel Lattur. This car park sits just behind the Hotel Costablanca, only a short distance from the usual market area, making the transition easy for regular shoppers.
This temporary relocation will apply on Friday December 5 and Friday December 12, and the market will otherwise operate exactly as usual. The surrounding streets offer convenient access from the town centre and are well known to residents, ensuring that the Friday market remains fully active despite the festive rearrangements.
Adjustments to the Mercat municipal
Turning to the Mercat municipal, located in the very heart of Denia’s old town, the building will open as normal on the morning of Saturday December 6, even though it is a public holiday. In addition, the market hall and its hospitality establishments will remain open until 23.00, as the town celebrates the much-loved Nit de la Llum. During this event, Denia’s streets glow with thousands of lights and shops extend their opening hours, creating one of the most atmospheric evenings of the year.
However, on Monday December 8, another public holiday, the Mercat municipal will remain closed for the entire day. This is the only significant interruption to its usual opening pattern during the festive period.
Monday market at Torrecremada
Finally, the Monday market in Torrecremada, which takes place in the large park located at Denia’s western entrance, will operate as usual on Monday December 8, despite the holiday. The park’s open layout makes it one of the town’s most accessible market spaces, and no changes are expected there throughout December.
With these adjustments, Denia aims to balance its commercial activity with the festive calendar, ensuring that markets can continue to run smoothly while creating a lively Christmas atmosphere for everyone.
