Thursday Attack
On Thursday, December 4, Charlie and Alistair, were walking along the paseo at Playa Ancha, (Casares, Málaga) when they were approached by the man. They recognised him from earlier online posts but were unable to avoid him. He sprayed Charlie with a foul-smelling liquid believed to be a mixture that resembles bird droppings.
The couple tried to intervene, and nearby residents attempted to help, but the man escaped in a car. Alistair told Euro Weekly News: “We saw him approaching and tried to avoid him, but he sprayed my husband. We ran after him, but he got away. His back and bag were covered in the gunge. We weren’t robbed, but many people have been.”
How the “Bird Man of Algeciras” Operates
Method and Modus Operandi
Alistair explained the thief’s method: the man pretends to be a tourist, carrying a water bottle and taking photos, all while observing potential victims. He uses a hidden spray bottle containing a foul-smelling liquid resembling bird droppings, which he sprays on individuals. He then offers to help clean the mess with water, creating a distraction to attempt pickpocket or steal bags.
“He is very quick. Even when we reacted immediately, turned to face him, the spray bottle had vanished, and he acted innocent. When we mentioned the police, he ran off and disappeared near Marina. We weren’t robbed, but many others have been,” Alistair added.
Authorities appear to take limited action, leaving locals feeling frustrated and vulnerable. The man has reportedly been arrested on several occasions, but repeated same-day releases allow him to continue operating along the coast, one residents adds ‘’Its a shame nothing more serious is being done to stop this’’
