The €2.7 million project, spearheaded by the city council, transforms the Plaza de la Constitución (as it is officially known) into a modern, accessible plaza that respects its past while embracing the future. Local leaders, former mayors, neighbours, and community groups gathered beneath the warm June sky to celebrate a long-awaited milestone. “This plaza doesn’t belong to any one group. It’s a shared heritage for all almerienses,” said Mayor María del Mar Vázquez. “It’s a symbol of unity, public service, and our shared future.”
Over 4,200 square meters have been redesigned to serve both beauty and purpose, blending history with functionality. Beloved elements like the ficus trees and the Monument to Los Coloraos were preserved after public outcry, reflecting the powerful role citizens played in shaping the final vision. As the mayor put it, “This space has witnessed both grand events and the small, everyday stories that weave together our identity.”
The renovated plaza now connects some of Almería’s most treasured landmarks, from the Alcazaba to the Parque de la Hoya, creating a walkable thread of culture and memory. More than a facelift, it’s a return to community, a stage once again open to gatherings, conversations, and shared moments.
“The Plaza Vieja is not just a place,” said the Junta’s regional delegate Aránzazu Martín. “It is where generations have lived, protested, grown, and celebrated together. And now, it’s ready to continue that legacy.”
