Benissa, located in the northeast of Alicante province, has firmly established itself as one of the Costa Blanca’s standout destinations after being named Spain’s Most Innovative Tourist Destination at the Smart Travel News Awards 2025. With a population of around 12,000, this town combines a remarkably well-preserved medieval historic centre, a coastline dotted with tranquil coves, and a strong commitment to sustainability. These qualities make it increasingly appealing, especially during the summer months.
Recognising Benissa’s smart tourism approach
The award, presented in Madrid on December 7, highlights the robust smart tourism model Benissa has developed in recent years. Competing against larger and more well-known destinations, the jury particularly valued the town’s deep transformation since 2022, driven by the municipal Smart Office and the technical team at Sien Consulting, who manage the Tourist Intelligence System (SIT-LAB).
Real-time data to improve visitor experience
The SIT-LAB system monitors over 600 indicators in real time, enabling the town to anticipate issues, adjust resources, and continuously enhance the experience of both residents and visitors. This approach has been especially effective in addressing one of Benissa’s main summer challenges: managing the high number of tourists drawn to its crystal-clear waters, scenic coastal paths, and peaceful natural surroundings.
Measurable results from smart initiatives
The results speak for themselves. Last summer, congestion at the coves decreased by 27 per cent thanks to active redistribution of tourist flows. Water consumption per night in tourist accommodation fell by 18 per cent following efficiency measures informed by real-time data. Additionally, visits to the historic centre increased by 22 per cent, driven by new cultural events and digital tools guiding visitors to less crowded areas.
Balancing technology, sustainability, and community
The jury praised Benissa’s ability to integrate technology, sustainability, and citizen participation into a single strategy. In a region that combines traditional agriculture with valuable coastal environments, achieving this balance is crucial for protecting the landscape while maintaining the economic vitality that tourism brings.
Investing wisely for a sustainable future
Part of Benissa’s success comes from efficient investment supported by European funds, enabling projects focused on digitalisation, sustainable mobility, and environmental protection. These initiatives have positioned the town as a national benchmark in tourism governance, proving that innovation depends not on size, but on vision.
Meeting the demands of the modern traveller
The award confirms that Benissa has adapted perfectly to the expectations of today’s visitor: someone seeking authentic experiences, well-preserved natural spaces, and destinations that manage tourism responsibly. With this recognition, the town reinforces its commitment to a future where technology and tradition coexist, offering a more balanced, sustainable, and competitive Costa Blanca.
