While the traditional Christmas market often conjures up images of snow and frost, the Costa del Sol offers a unique festive experience where sunshine complements seasonal cheer. Throughout December and into January, major towns and charming pueblos along the coast transform into havens for gift seekers, foodies, and families looking to soak up the Spanish holiday spirit.
Mistletoe and Malaga
The region’s capital, Malaga, is a must-visit, boasting several popular spots. Running until January 5, the market at Muelle Uno provides a picturesque setting, allowing visitors to browse stalls with stunning sea and bay views. Equally popular is the market located at the department store El Corte Inglés on Avenida de Andalucia, popularly known as Cortelandia. For sheer scale and fame, however, the many stalls set up in the Parque de la Alameda, right in the city centre, take the prize. For a simple dose of pure Christmas spirit, a stroll under the spectacular illuminated arches of Calle Larios is essential.
Mulled wine in Marbella
Travelling west, the coastal hub of Marbella sets up a delightful festive village on the Avenida del Mar Esplanade. With more than 30 stalls, shoppers can find a wide range of gift ideas, fashion, and crafts. Open daily from noon to 10pm until January 5, this market also keeps families entertained with a dedicated programme of shows, magicians, dance performances, and workshops for children. While on Saturday, December 13, San Pedro’s Market opens with dancers, Batucada, and choirs on Calle Lagasca.
Enchanting Estepona
Westward bound, Estepona focuses on festive attractions. The Christmas lights are switched on at Plaza Antonia Guerrero, accompanied by concerts and performances from local choirs. Until January 4, visitors can head to the Felipe VI Auditorium, where an ice rink, Santa’s house, and various children’s attractions await. For one day only, on December 21, the popular “Santa’s Christmas Village” will be set up on Plaza del Ajedrez, featuring artificial snow and interactive activities.
Mijas in a manger
In Mijas, the festive spirit is twofold. Mijas Pueblo’s Plaza de la Constitución hosts artisans and local merchants, open daily from 11am to 7pm until January 5. Meanwhile, the Esplanade Bulevar de La Cala de Mijas runs a market until January 6, featuring wooden kiosks, decorations, handicrafts, sweets, and hot drinks that create a truly cosy atmosphere under the lights.
Ring the bells and Benalmadena
Finally, the market in Benalmadena, located in front of the Casa de la Cultura in Arroyo de la Miel, attracts visitors with craft stalls, decorations, and a full programme of family entertainment, running until January 7. However, those planning a trip should note that the charming market with around twenty stalls in the heart of Fuengirola, offering nativity scenes and local crafts, is only open until December 21, making it the most fleeting of the Costa del Sol’s winter wonderlands.
