Hidden in the Canary Islands is a spot that’s largely gone unnoticed. Free from mass tourism, the island could be the perfect place to enjoy a quiet break. El Hierro is the second smallest Canary Island, it has only one set of traffic lights. The island is home to a huge range of restaurants serving authentic cuisine, and beautiful landscapes.
To get there, you can fly to Tenerife from just £46 in January, and then take the ferry across to El Hierro for around €13 (£11.30). This forgotten Canary Island is often snubbed by tourists meaning it has avoided the crowds seen in nearby Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Known for its rugged beauty, El Hierro is the second smallest Canary Island and the most westerly with a population of just 11,000.
Around 1.2 million years ago, El Hierro was born after it emerged from the Atlantic Ocean following millennia of violent undersea volcanic eruptions, creating a wild landscape.
Surrounding the island you’ll find beautiful clear waters home to a range of fish and rays.
Onland, the island is known for its unusual rock formations and deep black sand.
The “secret” island is the perfect place to enjoy a winter break, reports Daily Mail.
One must-visit spot while you’re there is Mirador de la Pena. This lookout point is popular with visitors who enjoy seeing the panoramic views from the top.
One person on Tripadvisor said: “The place where you can have a cup of coffee while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of El Hierro Island from a bird’s eye view.”
Another penned: “Mandatory stop in this isolated place. You can enjoy the panoramic views of one side of the island and enjoy the architecture of the Great César Manrique.”
Despite the lack of visitors, the island boasts temperatures of around 20C during the winter months.
If you’re looking for a winter holiday away from the gloomy skies of the UK, El Hierro can’t be missed.
