Malaga Province should prepare for a major change in weather conditions as a potent DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) is heading south and threatens intense storms, possible hail, and a notable drop in temperatures starting on Sunday, August 24, according to the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The warm summer days that have defined much of August are about to give way to unstable weather, potentially impacting day-to-day activities across the region.

The DANA, coming from France and entering through the Pyrenees, is driven by a seasonal shift in atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic, which is influenced by the transformation of Hurricane Erin into an extratropical storm. AEMET has warned that this weather system could be “potentially dangerous”, with scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms expected, particularly in eastern Spain, including mountainous areas and parts of the Balearic Islands like Mallorca.

Malaga region under yellow warning for storms

While Malaga Province is not currently under the highest alert levels, the risk of heavy showers and gusty winds is still there, especially in coastal and inland areas. Recent examples from other regions of Spain reveal the potential intensity of the weather front coming: in Ontinyent (Valencia), a hailstorm dumped 30 litres per square metre in a matter of a few minutes, which has damaged cars and buildings, while Agres (Alicante) saw nearly 60 litres per square metre in under 45 minutes.

Local authorities are advising residents to stay informed about weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and storms, and to prepare for sudden changes in conditions. Mind where you park cars, and make sure that they are not left in typical flows of floodwaters.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
