Almería was gripped recently by a severe cold snap, with temperatures plunging well below freezing across multiple towns.
The cold front began recently, bringing biting cold particularly to higher-altitude areas. In Calar Alto, located in the municipality of Gérgal, the mercury fell to a bone-chilling -7.3°C, marking one of the lowest temperatures in the province.
Sub-zero readings across Almanzora Valley and Los Vélez
The Almanzora Valley and Los Vélez regions have also been significantly affected. In Chirivel, temperatures reached -6.2°C, while Oria recorded -5.6°C. Several other municipalities faced similar conditions: Maria registered -4.3°C, Laujar de Andarax dropped to -3.7°C, and Fiñana hit -3.6°C. Even traditionally milder areas such as Albox (-1.5°C) and Tabernas (-0.2°C) experienced freezing temperatures.
Rain offers brief relief from drought
Following the bitter cold, heavy rainfall finally swept through parts of Almería. While this offered a temporary reprieve from the drought conditions affecting the region, the rainfall was uneven and did not completely resolve the water scarcity issue. Water reserves remain a concern, though the precipitation brought a welcome change to the parched landscape.
Chilly nights set to return
Forecasts indicate that temperatures will drop again in the coming days, although they may not reach the extremes of the previous cold snap. Residents should still expect frosty evenings and prepare accordingly. Authorities continue to advise precautions to prevent frost-related damage to homes, vehicles, and crops.
