A drink-fuelled boyfriend assaulted his partner while on holiday in Mallorca, prompting her to flee to the airport and go home. Nathan Kane subjected his then girlfriend to repeated slaps and hit her in the face and head in their hotel room, hundreds of miles from home, during what proved to be a harrowing ordeal.
The victim managed to escape with hotel personnel assisting her in arranging a taxi to the airport. Upon her return to the UK, she attended the emergency department at the University Hospital of North Tees where medical staff confirmed she had sustained a fractured cheekbone.
Teesside Crown Court was told Kane had been consuming alcohol excessively throughout the day when his “behaviour worsened” in the evening, Recorder Andrew Walker outlined whilst summarising the case. She characterised him as “loud and uncontrollable” prior to him becoming jealous and accusing her of being unfaithful.
Kane, now 26, informed her he wanted to hit her before lunging in her direction, delivering strikes to her face and head. The victim vacated the hotel room for half an hour to allow him time to calm down, though upon her return he was not there – having departed with cash, his passport and the room key, reports Teesside Live.
Upon Kane’s return to the hotel room, he initially apologised for his behaviour. “You then began to question her about where she had been,” Recorder Walker said.
He proceeded to make additional accusations before launching another attack on her. Using an open hand, he struck the side of her head, prevented her exit and she fell to the ground.
“She said something to you,” stated Recorder Walker. “You grabbed her by the neck and squeezed. That made her feel sick and lightheaded. She fell onto the sofa.
“Not content with that, you continued to hit her with substantial force.”
After saying she needed some fresh air, he allowed her onto the hotel room’s balcony from which she managed to flee, the court was told. She escaped and concealed herself in the hotel toilets before requesting assistance from staff who arranged a taxi to the airport.
She was subsequently able to organise her flight home.
The victim sustained bruising to her face and arms along with a fractured cheekbone during the October 2024 incident. In her victim impact statement, she revealed: “Every day I ask myself what I did to deserve this. What I could possibly said to make him that angry.”
She described how she has lost her spark following the attack, struggles to envisage future relationships and experiences flashbacks. Calum McNicholas, defending, explained that Kane, currently self-employed with monthly earnings of approximately £2,000, has no prior convictions and remains dedicated to his rehabilitation.
He characterised this as an “isolated incident” with no history of domestic violence either before or following the offence. The court heard Kane had suffered trauma after finding his mother in a critical state before she died and the incident occurred on the first anniversary of her passing.
Recorder Walker issued Kane, from Ellington Terrace in Ashington, a 21-month sentence suspended for two years. He is required to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities, 200 hours of unpaid work, and adhere to a 120-day alcohol abstinence requirement.
Additionally, he must pay £1,000 in compensation to his victim at a rate of £100 per month. A seven-year restraining order also imposed.
