TORREVIEJA residents have the opportunity to see an active part of history, moored in one of the Costa Blanca’s most bustling, busy, and beautiful marinas. The pailebote Pascual Flores, a famed schooner from 1917, has returned from its international tour and is moored in the Marina Salinas in Torrevieja, a piece of the town’s history and culture that visitors can see and touch.

A historic vessel, available for viewing in Torrevieja

The incredible ship has been restored and made ready for navigation in the shipyards of Punta Umbria in Huelva. Equipped for educational exhibitions, the historic vessel can be visited by the general public as well as school children, as part of a programme designed in collaboration with the Torrevieja Municipal Institute of Culture.

The ship has recently returned from a European tour, wherein it visited different ports in Spain after having participated in various festivals together with other large sailing boats and historic ships from around the world. During its stay in these European cities, the Pascual Flores has received countless visitors, coming on board to learn about its history and the fabulous maritime heritage of Torrevieja that this ship represents. The ship is known as an “ambassador” for the tourist and cultural promotion of the city, and is a symbol of the classic historic sailboats of the Mediterranean.

A schooner with a rich history, promoting the maritime traditions of Torrevieja

The schooner, during its early years, was used for the export of fruit, salt, and other goods, both in Mediterranean ports and anchorages, as well as along the north and west coasts of Africa. Over its years of activity, the vessel changed owners and underwent significant structural modifications, eventually ending its days in England. The vessel was purchased by the Torrevieja Town Council in 1999.

From 2005-2008, the schooner underwent comprehensive restoration work, carried out by the master caulker Antonio Carrasco. After several years of inactivity, finally, on October 30, 2020, the Torrevieja Town Council and the Nao Victoria Foundation signed a collaboration agreement for the transfer, repair and refurbishment of the schooner. The vessel now sails, tours, and makes stops in ports around the world, promoting Torrevieja and its deeply-rooted coastal maritime traditions.

The pailebote Pascual Flores, which has been moored in the marina since November of last year, will be available for viewing in the Marina Salinas in Torrevieja until February 1. Visitors can see it from Thursday to Sunday, from 10:00am to 6:00pm for the price of just €5.
