UPDATE
Spain’s weather agency AEMET has issued a red alert for parts of Alicante and Murcia this Friday October 10, warning of torrential rain and possible flash flooding as DANA “Alice” sweeps across the country.
Forecasters say up to 180 litres of rain per square metre could fall in just 12 hours, especially along southern Alicante’s coast and nearby areas of Murcia.
“The situation could worsen quickly, and people should avoid unnecessary travel,” AEMET said, urging locals to follow official updates and be cautious near flood-prone areas.
The red warning – the highest on the weather scale – comes as the DANA brings unstable skies, heavy downpours and sudden drops in temperature across much of eastern Spain.
Storm ‘Alice’ brings unstable skies and plunging temperatures
The DANA, a high-altitude cold front known for triggering sudden, intense weather, is already disrupting conditions across the Valencian Community, Murcia, Tarragona, Almería, and the Balearic Islands.
Skies will remain cloudy or overcast, with thunderstorms and heavy showers likely throughout Thursday, October 9 and Friday October 10. Temperatures will also fall sharply in parts of inland eastern Spain, while strong winds could make conditions even more challenging.
AEMET says that although lighter rain will reach northern regions like Galicia and the Cantabrian coast, the heaviest rainfall will stay focused on southeastern Spain and the Balearics, where locally torrential downpours could cause flooding and travel disruption.
Residents urged to stay alert and avoid risky areas
Local authorities are on alert as emergency services prepare for possible road closures, power cuts, and evacuations in flood-risk zones.
Officials are advising residents and tourists in the affected areas to stay indoors where possible, avoid driving through flooded roads, and keep updated via official channels.
While the worst of the storm is expected to pass by Saturday, AEMET warns that yellow or orange alerts could remain in some eastern regions through the weekend.
For now, the message is simple: stay cautious, stay informed, and don’t underestimate this storm – Spain’s Mediterranean coast is once again bracing for a wild autumn weekend.
