THE PROVINCE of Alicante now has two new stations for the early detection of earthquakes in the area, funded through a grants programme by the Generalitat Valenciana and run by the Regional Ministry of Education, Culture, Universities and Employment. One is located on the campus of the University of Alicante, at the Faculty of Sciences II, and the other is in the district of La Matanza, in the Orihuela municipality.

State of the art stations to improve Vega Baja safety

These meteorological stations are meant to improve these areas’ capacity for anticipation and response to earthquakes, especially in particularly vulnerable places like the southeast Iberian Peninsula. The province, and especially the Vega Baja district, is vulnerable to extreme weather events, including torrential rainfall, droughts, floods, and of course, seismic activity.

The stations receive and store data on the servers of the Seismic Network of the Valencian Community. The data can also be accessed for scientific research as well as in land management, risk prevention, and the spreading of meteorological information.

Collecting seismic data on the Costa Blanca South for research, safety, and a better tomorrow

The installation of the stations is part of a larger project, aimed at developing forecasting and early warning systems for seismic and environmental dangers in the province. The project aims to improve the capacity to predict and respond to natural phenomena in vulnerable areas.

By providing precise, real-time data, the system is expected to vastly improve decision-making during events including earthquakes on the Costa Blanca, and support faster and better-informed responses in regional authorities. Through analysis of seismic activity, the weather, soil, and other geological factors, the stations can help researchers learn more about the earthquakes in the Vega Baja region, and help keep citizens safe while doing it.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
