Eight feminist associations from Marina Alta — including Teulada Moraira, Pego, Verger, Denia, Jesús Pobre, Calpe and Valencia — have issued a strong statement denouncing the latest cases of gender-based violence in Spain. The groups, which also include the regional organisation Xarxa de Dones Marina Alta, have called on society and political parties to take urgent action.
The associations cite recent incidents in Torremolinos, Algeciras and Javea, where a Vox councillor was removed from office over an alleged sexual harassment case involving a municipal employee. In their statement, they declare: “We say enough is enough. Sister, we do believe you.”
Abuse of power exposed
According to the statement, this year has exposed several cases of abuse of power and patriarchal violence among men in positions of authority — the so-called “pillars of the community”, who should be role models. Instead, these men have perpetuated sexist attitudes, exploiting women in prostitution for private events, humiliating and subordinating women through words, gestures or behaviours culturally accepted, and engaging in harassment and coercion.
The associations emphasise that phrases such as “women always say no when they really mean yes” reflect deeply entrenched cultural sexism and abuse of power. Women are no longer willing to remain silent or bow their heads. They are speaking out, reporting abuse, and demanding justice.
Everyday harassment matters
The statement also highlights everyday microaggressions, such as unwanted physical contact or invasive looks, which contribute to a culture of fear and discrimination. “These so-called harmless actions are part of a broader pattern of sexist behaviour that leads to workplace, social, and cultural harassment, and even gender-based violence,” the statement reads.
The associations stress that no woman should be blamed for being a victim of harassment. Questions like “Why did you go there?” or “Why didn’t you defend yourself?” perpetuate victim-blaming and allow abuse to continue.
Demanding accountability
Calling for accountability at all levels, the feminist groups demand that political parties take measures to stop harassment and abuse within their ranks. They insist that those responsible be punished — with consequences that go beyond merely symbolic gestures — to set a real example for society.
Empathy and support
“Women no longer stay silent. We denounce, we confront, we support each other. Sister, we do believe you,” the statement concludes, extending support to all women affected.
The message from Marina Alta’s feminist associations is clear: society must end gender violence, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure women are always believed and supported.
