THE COSTA BLANCA, aside from strong participation in the world-renowned tourism fair FITUR in Madrid, also made its presence known in another bustling and busy tourism event, this time in Helsinki. The Matka Nordic Travel Fair, which ran from January 15 to January 18, was a key place to focus on active, nature, and wellness tourism aimed at the Nordic market, and the Costa Blanca made waves there through the Alicante Provincial Council’s tourism agency and the Costa Blanca Tourist Board.
The Matka Nordic Travel Fair: The most important tourism event in Northern Europe
The event, which this year marked its 38th edition, is considered one of the most important travel events in Europe, and the most important one in the northern half of the continent with an average attendance of 56,000 visitors. This year, more than 70 countries participated in the event, each specially focusing on the hot topics this year: health, sustainability, and nature in tourism. These are all segments in which the Costa Blanca seeks to improve its position on an international scale.
Sports tourism, a major draw for the Costa Blanca
In the case of the Costa Blanca, active and sport tourism are important draws for the Nordic market, and particularly for the Finnish. In the Costa Blanca, activities including cycling and golf are a major highlight for holidaymakers, with no shortage of courses, activities and events to take part in, especially during peak season. The mild winter weather is also a major plus for the area, as tourists can remain active without worrying about bitterly cold temperatures; something the Nordic audiences are highly interested in.
Another key factor is air connectivity: the Costa Blanca has a particularly strong connection with Finland as well as the rest of the Nordic countries. Currently, the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has 201 weekly flights to Helsinki and offers more than 37,800 seats, allowing for a steady flow of visitors from Northern Europe.
During the event, the Costa Blanca region had an opportunity to shine and impress the Nordic audiences, who have long been interested in experiencing the Costa’s vibrant culture, shining shores, and beautiful inland towns.
