Malaga Provincial Council has approved funding of over €300,000 for a new section of the Senda Litoral coastal path in Benalmadena, specifically along the scenic Playa de Carvajal.

The project will improve a 435-metre stretch of the promenade, running from the left side of the popular chiringuito Kalifato to the end of the stepped ramp that connects the beach to Avenida del Sol, near the Carvajal lighthouse. The project will improve pedestrian access, repair existing dirt paths, and upgrade infrastructure while maintaining full respect for the natural coastal environment.

The funding comes in the form of a direct grant to Benalmadena Council, which allows the local authority to begin immediately contracting out the construction works. The project was designed by Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol, a company under the Provincial Council. The works include repairing 1,510 square metres of the existing dirt path – essential not only for walkers but also for emergency and beach cleaning vehicles – along with improvements to 292 square metres of the stepped ramp pavement and 364 square metres of the rock revetment (escollera). Additionally, 326 metres of wooden fencing will be repaired.

Costa del Sol walkway almost complete

Francisco Salado, President of the Diputación de Malaga, said that the Senda Litoral (Costa del Sol coastal walkway) is now 90 per cent complete along the province’s coastline. Since 2016, the Provincial Council has invested €15.1 million in a total of 44 projects spanning 11 towns. It is hoped, one day, the “Senda Litoral” will reach from the western Costa del Sol all around the south and eastern coasts of Spain – an even bigger challenge for serious walkers like the Costa del Sol’s own George Nayda, who recently walked the entirety of the Costa del Sol coastline as a personal challenge in under 24 hours.

The new section on Playa de Carvajal will further connect residents and holidaymakers to this iconic coastal corridor, which already offers stunning sea views and promotes sustainable mobility along the Costa del Sol. Works are expected to begin soon once the contracting process is complete, adding yet another attractive and functional link to Benalmadena’s beachfront.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
