'Emily in Paris' Fate Decided by Netflix After Latest Divisive Season

Eighteen days after the latest season premiered, Netflix has decided Emily in Paris‘ fate, and it is good news for fans of the series, as it is not only returning but also going back to its roots. Emily in Paris Season 5 debuted on Netflix on Dec. 18, 2025, moving the title character to Rome. Netflix is not letting go of Emily in Paris anytime soon, as the streamer revealed the series will return.

Netflix officially confirmed Emily in Paris would return for Season 6 with a YouTube video featuring star Lily Collins. Collins appears in a selfie video on a tripod on a balcony in Paris, where, through the camera, she leans over a breakfast table with a croissant, blowing out a “6” candle. If the visuals weren’t enough, the caption confirmed that Emily in Paris Season 6 would see the series return to Paris, France, saying, “Home sweet home. ‘Emily in Paris’ is Now One of Netflix’s Longest Running Series

Created by Darren Star, creator of hit series like Beverly Hills 90210 and Sex and the City, Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), an American who moves to France for work, to find herself in for a culture shock. The series also includes Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Samuel Arnold, and Bruno Gouery. Debuting on Oct. 2, 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when audiences needed a comfort show, Emily in Paris became an instant hit for Netflix despite negative reviews.

Emily in Paris‘ decision to move the series back to Paris follows a controversial decision to set Season 5 in Rome, Italy. The creative move even managed to cause, as Lilly Collins described it, a “political love triangle” between French President Emmanuel Macron and Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri. However, the decision to move to Rome didn’t impact the quality of the series. On the contrary, Emily in Paris Season 5 was the best-reviewed season on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, above the previous high of Season 4’s 68% and a far cry from the 61% score for Season 1. However, Season 5 generated the worst audience score, suggesting a divide between critics and fans of the series.

Emily in Paris renewal for Season 6 makes it one of Netflix’s longest-running original series. The longest-running Netflix series is Virgin River, whose Season 8 renewal was announced before Season 7 premiered. The previous record holder was Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons from 2015 to 2022. Orange Is the New Black also ran for seven seasons, debuting in 2013 and concluding in 2019, but had three episodes fewer than Grace and Frankie. Emily in Paris joins the likes of The Crown and Peaky Blinders, both of which ran for six seasons, a rare feat when many Netflix Originals struggle to make it past three seasons, with some never making it past one. Emily in Paris can now say it has more seasons than Stranger Things.
