Estepona is set to be the talk of the Costa del Sol with its newest dazzling decoration: one of Andalucía’s largest crochet Christmas trees. The perfect way to infuse colour and festive cheer into the streets of Estepona.
Standing at an impressive 12 metres tall, the Christmas tree is taking shape in the Plaza José Vázquez in Cancelada, promising to be a real highlight for locals and visitors alike.
A community effort come to life
The crotchet Christmas tree is entirely made up of thousands of handcrafted crochet pieces. Each square has been lovingly stitched by volunteers of the local crochet workshop held at the Cancelada town hall. Since September, this group of dedicated women have spent hundreds of hours creating the colourful designs that now adorn the towering structure.
Begoña Ortíz, the deputy mayor for the Extrarradio area, described the project as “a brilliant example of talent, dedication, and community spirit. It’s not just a decoration – it’s a celebration of what can be achieved when people come together with enthusiasm.”
An artistic landmark
This crochet Christmas tree stands out not only for its size and originality but also for its community-focused nature. Each handmade piece combines traditional crochet techniques with personalised designs that reflect the creativity and personality of the women who contributed to the project. The result is a truly unique festive installation, showcasing both art and social unity.
The grand reveal
The tree will be officially unveiled on 12th December at 6 pm, just before the Zambomba Flamenca, a traditional festive music and dance event organised by the town hall. Attendees can enjoy performances by the group ‘Con Azúcar y Canela’ and the dance academy ‘Solo Flamenco’, as well as a tasting of Christmas treats and roasted chestnuts.
It’s a truly unique festive attraction, combining art, tradition, and community spirit – definitely one to see this Christmas in Estepona.
