If you’re looking to avoid the crowds in Europe, then there are some lesser-known destinations you may want to add to your travel wish list – and they’re all stunning
The latest social media holiday hotspots may look dreamy online, but often, the reality involves battling through crowds of tourists.
Sure, the photos on Instagram might look idyllic, but they rarely capture the hordes of people jostling for that perfect shot of a Santorini sunset – so it begs the question of whether it’s actually worth it.
That’s why travel enthusiast and TikToker @sandymakessense has shared some lesser-known European destinations that you’ve “probably never heard about,” arguing that quieter locations allow for a more relaxed experience.
According to The Savvy Backpacker, Paris tops the list as Europe’s most visited city, attracting over 50 million visitors annually. It’s closely followed by London, with 40 million visitors, and Rome, which sees over 35 million sightseers each year.
However, if you’re seeking an alternative to these bustling – albeit beautiful – cities, Sandy has some suggestions. “Here are three budget-friendly destinations to avoid the crowds in 2025, starting with this underrated city break,” she proposed.
Riga, Latvia
Sandy went on to say: “If you’re looking for a colourful and cosy place brimming with coffee shops, flea markets, vintage shopping opportunities, and a quirky bar and art scene, add Riga and Latvia to your list”.
Riga’s historic centre is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil and 19th-century wooden architecture.
Blogger Claire’s Footsteps enthused about the Latvian capital, stating: “The Latvian capital city of Riga is brimming with historic buildings, museums and attractions.”
She also recommended spending a “couple of days” exploring the city.
Andalusia, Spain
Sandy suggested Andalusia, a “region in Spain that looks like it could well be in Morocco”.
She elaborated: “Arab cultural influences and Spanish traditions make Andalusia in Spain one of my favourite places in Europe. Haggle at the souks and admire the architecture and fun local customs.”
Lonely Planet describes Andalucía as a year-round destination, citing long daylight hours, plenty of sun and sand, and year-round sunshine as some of the reasons to visit. The region is a hub for water sports, attracting kayakers, snorkelers, swimmers and kitesurfers to the beaches of the Costa de la Luz and Costa del Sol.
Gdańsk and Sopot, Poland
Her final recommendation was Gdańsk and Sopot in Poland, where visitors can enjoy a “where you can have a very trendy, colourful and cool city holiday”.
Additionally, it can be followed by a “followed by a relaxing Baltic spa break in one of Europe’s best spa towns officially.”
Blogger Where Goes Rose endorsed Gdańsk as a must-visit destination, praising its beautiful architecture, vibrant nightlife, and affordability.
