The Costa Blanca faces a return of severe weather as heavy rain and thunderstorms move across the region on Monday September 8 and Tuesday September 9. According to Spain’s weather agency AEMET, a high level of atmospheric instability is generating adverse storms, particularly in Castellón, the south of Valencia province and the north of Alicante. An orange alert has been issued for Marina Alta.
On Monday, rainfall reached intensities of up to 30 mm per hour, with totals between 60 and 80 mm in just 12 hours. AEMET warned that storms could also bring hail and strong gusts of wind, especially in southern Valencia and northern Alicante, where large hail is possible.
Although conditions are expected to weaken overnight, storms are likely to reactivate on Tuesday afternoon, with more than 100 mm of rain possible in 12 hours, together with powerful winds and hail. The instability should ease by Wednesday September 10, but heavy showers could still develop along the Mediterranean coast.
The Generalitat’s Emergency Coordination Centre has stressed that the forecast is highly probable, though pinpointing the most affected areas is difficult. Local authorities are urged to activate civil protection plans, monitor alerts, and remind residents to avoid flood-prone areas, keep vehicles away from dry riverbeds and campgrounds, and report any incidents promptly.
