A historic landmark brought back to life
SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR’s Balneario de Las Monjas on Villananitos Beach has been fully restored, bringing a historic and much-loved landmark back to life. The balneario reminds us of the tradition of bathing in the Mar Menor, from a time when the beaches had little sand and people looked for private spots to enjoy the warm, salty waters. For many long-time residents, these wooden structures are a symbol of local identity, summer memories, and the unique relationship the town has always had with the sea.
Preserving traditional design and local craftsmanship
The town council carried out the restoration with great care, keeping the building’s traditional design and materials intact. Much of the work focused on respecting its original appearance while ensuring the structure could withstand modern use and coastal conditions. The project included repairing the central hut, restoring decorative elements, consolidating the main platform, and refurbishing the access walkway.
One of the standout details of the restoration is the involvement of local craftsmen. Some had even worked on the original construction years ago, bringing invaluable knowledge and respect for the building’s heritage. Their skill ensured that the balneario’s charm was not lost in the process. Instead, the result feels authentic, familiar, and true to its roots, exactly what many locals hoped for.
A new chapter of community use
Beyond its architectural and historic value, the town wants people to enjoy the balneario for years to come. Plans are in place for guided tours and family activities, letting locals and visitors experience this special spot safely and responsibly. These activities will offer insights into the balneario tradition, the history of the Mar Menor, and the social customs that shaped the area’s early bathing culture.
By opening the space to educational and cultural events, the council hopes to strengthen the connection between residents, visitors, and the town’s maritime heritage. It also supports the ongoing effort to encourage more sustainable and respectful tourism in sensitive areas like the Mar Menor.

A key project in the sustainable tourism plan
The restoration, costing over €30,000, is part of San Pedro’s Sustainable Tourism Plan, funded by EU recovery and resilience funds. This plan highlights the importance of protecting cultural and environmental assets while boosting the local economy. Reviving the balneario is one of several initiatives aimed at restoring the town’s heritage sites and enhancing the visitor experience without compromising the natural surroundings.
A renewed highlight on Villananitos Beach
With its restoration complete, the balneario is once again a highlight of Villananitos Beach and a reminder of the town’s rich heritage. Visitors can now enjoy a beautifully restored structure that connects the past and present, while locals regain an important symbol of their coastal identity. The Balneario de Las Monjas stands ready for a new era, welcoming all who wish to rediscover one of San Pedro del Pinatar’s most unique treasures.
