Many bank holidays in Spain can be hard to keep track of, due to variations in holiday calendars across the country. Public holidays in Spain often depend on the region and, in many cases, the city itself. Monday, 10th November 2025, is one of these confusing dates that is a bank holiday for some in Spain but not others.

The 9th and 10th November holiday explained

Madrid honours the Virgen de la Almudena, the city’s patron, on Sunday, 9th November. The devotion traces its roots to a medieval legend. During Muslim rule, Christians are said to have hidden an image of the Virgin in the city walls. After King Alfonso VI reconquered Madrid in 1085, a section of the wall by the old alcázar collapsed, revealing the statue. The title “Almudena” is commonly linked to the Arabic al‑mudayna, meaning citadel.

Is 10th November a bank holiday in Spain? National, regional and local rules

Spain’s public holidays operate on three levels: national (festivos nacionales), autonomous community, and municipal. The date can only be a day off where a regional or local authority has designated it in the official working calendar

When a celebration falls on a Sunday, like Día de la Almudena, the holiday is often moved to Monday. However, it is a municipal holiday within the capital of Madrid and not recognised nationwide. Therefore, it is only a bank holiday in the city of Madrid, not even the province, making it a normal working day for everyone except those working and living in the city.

Other Spanish bank holidays in winter

Winter days include All Saints’ Day on 1st November, the 3rd November bank holiday, and local patronal feasts such as Madrid’s Virgen de la Almudena on 9th November.

December is also a month of public and regional holidays, with the long weekend of the 6th and 8th of December especially important. This is followed by 25th December, 1st and 6th of January, with the exact impact varying by autonomous community and municipality.
