Italy secured its third consecutive Davis Cup crown on Sunday, completing a dominant campaign in Bologna without two of its biggest names, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. The hosts sealed the title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Spain, reaffirming their depth and collective strength in men’s team tennis.

Matteo Berrettini set the tone in the final at the SuperTennis Arena, producing a controlled 6-3, 6-4 win over Pablo Carreno Busta. Flavio Cobolli then mounted a spirited comeback against Jaume Munar, prevailing 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 to clinch the decisive point, repeating the pattern of his match-winning efforts in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. His teammates hoisted him in celebration moments after he secured Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title.

Italy’s run this week was striking not only for its efficiency but for the absence of star performers. Sinner, ranked world No. 2 and the architect of Italy’s triumphs in 2023 and 2024, opted to skip the event to prepare for the forthcoming season. Musetti, ranked eighth, was also missing. Their absence, however, proved inconsequential as Italy swept Austria, Belgium and Spain by identical 2-0 scorelines.

Spain, themselves without world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, were unable to match Italy’s rhythm. The six-time champions were playing their first final since 2019 but struggled to stretch the tie to a deciding doubles rubber.

Italy’s first Davis Cup triumph came in 1976, before the back-to-back titles in Málaga in 2023 and 2024. This victory marks their first on home soil — a milestone underscoring a golden era for Italian tennis.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
