There’s no better way to shake off the holiday indulgences than with a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean, all while supporting an incredibly worthy cause. The much-loved annual Mad Hatters New Year’s Day Sponsored Swim is back on January 1st, starting at 2pm at the stunning La Zenia Beach in Orihuela Costa.

Organised by the fun-loving Mad Hatters group and hosted in partnership with the popular Pint Depot Irish pub, the event has become a tradition for expats in the Villamartin and Blue Lagoon areas. Whether you’re an Olympic swimmer or just fancy a quick paddle for laughs, everyone is welcome to join in the chilly fun – fancy dress is highly encouraged!

The swim raises vital funds for DEBRA (Piel de Mariposa – Butterfly Children), the charity dedicated to supporting those children living with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare and painful genetic condition known as “Butterfly Skin”. People with EB have extremely fragile skin that blisters and tears at the slightest touch, requiring daily bandaging and constant care. There is currently no cure, but DEBRA provides essential medical support, research funding, and community aid to hundreds of affected individuals and families across Spain.

Thousands raised for DEBRA

Past events have seen crowds in creative costumes, from Men in Black suits to all sorts of mad hats, braving the waves with cheers and applause from spectators on the shore. In previous years, the event has raised thousands of euros, with one year bringing in over €3,200 thanks to generous donations from participants and supporters.

After the invigorating sea dip, the celebration continues back at the Pint Depot, located on Carretera San Miguel de Salinas, in the Urbanisation Pueblo Principe area of Orihuela. Head there for the famous annual entertainment with the Mad Hatters with live music, dancing, and a warm atmosphere to thaw out with a well-earned pint. It’s the perfect way to kick off the new year with friends and family and the mad-hatter expat community.

Swimmers and sponsors are urgently needed! Pop into the Pint Depot bar to sign up, get sponsorship forms, or simply donate. €5 is a suggested minimum. Tell your friends and family – all are welcome, whether you’re taking the plunge or cheering from the beach. Every euro counts and goes directly to helping those with butterfly skin live better lives. For more details, visit the Pint Depot.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
