The Costa del Sol, from Torremolinos to Manilva, is getting ready for a “Puente” (bridge) long weekend as the national Dia de la Hispanidad holiday, celebrating Spain’s heritage and Columbus’ arrival in the Americas, falls on the Sunday, and so creates a bank holiday on Monday, October 13.
The adjustment will see banks, schools, and many shops close, though the region’s fun and friendly feel will ensure some services remain open.
Miramar in Fuengirola/Mijas says they will be open normal hours until 10pm on Monday, however, according to their website, La Cañada in Marbella will only open the food court upstairs. Supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl, and Carrefour will open stores closer to the coast, but not likely more inland. But Mercadona will remain closed, sticking to its strict bank holiday policy. Expats should stock up early, as smaller shops may shut midday, and delivery services like Glovo could face delays.
Public transport, shops & services affected in Costa del Sol on long weekend
Public transport will run on a holiday schedule, with Renfe’s C1 train line (Malaga–Fuengirola) operating every 20–30 minutes and buses like the M-110 (Malaga–Marbella) slightly reduced.
Expect traffic jams on the A-7 as visitors flood in for the long weekend. Doctor’s surgeries will offer morning-only primary care (8pm to 3pm), with urgent care at SUAP points until 8pm.
Sunday’s festivities will be a celebration of the nation, with Torremolinos hosting an 11am parade, free tapas at Plaza Costa del Sol, and evening fireworks. Marbella’s yacht illuminations and flamenco shows, plus Estepona’s Virgen del Pilar processions, add to local character. Expect a lot of flag waving as Marbella plans to hand out thousand who turn up for the parades and the hoisting of the biggest flag in the city.
Expats may be surprised by midday closures, cash shortages at cash machines, and crowded bars despite quieter beaches. The weather is not looking that great, so check AEMET warnings if you are planning on venturing out. If you are hoping to find a table for lunch in any of the restaurants along the coast on Sunday, book ahead as many Spanish families will eat out that day.
Plan ahead for this festive puente, and join the celebrations to experience the Costa del Sol’s unique mix of tradition and national pride.
