A small earthquake with a magnitude of 1.9 was recorded in the municipality of Algueña, Alicante province, on Thursday July 31, according to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN).
The tremor occurred at a depth of five kilometres, and no material damage or injuries have been reported, as confirmed by the Emergency Coordination Centre (CCE).
This is the third earthquake recorded in Alicante in recent weeks, following two minor quakes felt in Algorfa and Los Montesinos.
Weak tremors
Although tremors in the province are usually weak and rarely cause any harm, preparedness remains essential, especially in areas with regular seismic activity.
Authorities recommend keeping a basic emergency kit at home. Essentials include a first aid kit, flashlights (preferably dynamo-powered), bottled water, non-perishable food, a whistle, a small fire extinguisher, and a battery-powered radio in case of power or internet outages. Spare batteries and copies of important documents should also be stored in a safe and easily accessible place.
Safest areas
It is also advised that all household members know the safest areas of the home and how to evacuate quickly if needed. Practising family drills can help ensure a calm response during an actual emergency.
Other safety tips include securing shelves, mirrors and picture frames to the wall, avoiding placing heavy objects on top of furniture, and regularly checking gas, electrical and water connections.
Even small changes can reduce the risk of injury during an earthquake. While quakes like the one in Algueña may seem insignificant, prevention is key should a stronger one occur in the future.
