After an initial round earlier this year that saw 200 properties removed, a second phase of checks has now led to the elimination of 2,000 irregular tourist rentals in the Region of Murcia.
Agreement between the Government and Airbnb
The initiative is the result of an agreement between the regional government and Airbnb, introduced in March, which requires every short-term rental advertised on the platform to display a valid tourist registration number. Any listing without one has now been deactivated.
Property owners choose to register
Since the plan began, the number of registered listings in the region has doubled. Many property owners chose to regularise their situation rather than lose access to the platform. Airbnb also carried out an information campaign to help hosts understand the new requirements and prepare for future European regulations on short-term rentals.
Tourist hotspots most affected
La Manga, one of the main tourist areas in the region, was among the areas most affected by the changes.
Transparency and protection
The regional tourism department said the agreement ensures greater transparency and helps protect both visitors and local businesses. Officials stressed that this is the first time in Spain that all unregistered tourist rentals on Airbnb have been fully removed in one region.
