The Region of Murcia will proudly fly 36 Blue Flags this summer, three more than last year.
These internationally recognised awards are given to beaches and marinas that meet high standards for cleanliness, safety, and environmental care.
Out of the 36 flags, 29 have been awarded to beaches and 7 to marinas. This puts Murcia in second place among Spain’s single-province regions with the most Blue Flags, just behind the Balearic Islands.
Cartagena leads the way
Cartagena is once again the standout municipality, earning a total of 10 Blue Flags, two more than in 2024. Eight of these are for beaches, including Cala Cortina, El Portús, Isla Plana, La Chapineta, Levante-Cabo de Palos, San Ginés, Cala del Barco, and the newly recognised Calblanque. The city also gained two more for its marinas: the Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena and the Yacht Port Cartagena.
New recognition for coastal parks
A major highlight this year is that all coastal regional parks in Murcia now have at least one beach flying the Blue Flag. This includes the Calblanque Regional Park, which joins the list for the first time with Calblanque beach. Other parks already recognised include Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre, with the beach of Calnegre, and Las Salinas and Arenales de San Pedro, with Las Salinas and La Torre Derribada beaches.
Juan Francisco Martínez, director of the Region’s Tourism Institute (Itrem), said this is a big step forward for sustainable tourism. ‘It shows our commitment to protecting the natural beauty of our coastline while welcoming visitors,’ he said.
Other top spots in the region
Águilas follows Cartagena with 9 Blue Flags. Seven of these are for beaches, Calarreona, La Casica Verde, La Colonia, Las Delicias, Levante, Matalentisco, and Poniente, and two are for its marinas: Club Náutico de Águilas and the Juan Montiel marina.
Mazarrón earned 7 flags this year. Six are for its beaches, Bahía, Rihuete, Playa Grande-Castellar, El Mojón, El Alamillo, and Nares, which has regained its flag, and one for the Club de Regatas marina.
San Pedro del Pinatar received 5 Blue Flags, including 3 for its beaches and 2 for marinas. A new flag was awarded to the Club Náutico Villa de San Pedro.
San Javier now has 3 flags, with the addition of Arenal beach joining La Ensenada del Esparto and El Pedrucho. The joint application by San Javier and Cartagena for Banco del Tabal-Calnegre beach in La Manga continues to be recognised.
Finally, Lorca keeps its Blue Flag for Calnegre beach.
Spain tops 740 blue flags
Across the country, Spain has achieved a total of 749 Blue Flags in 2025, 642 for beaches and 101 for marinas. That’s two more than the previous year, showing continued commitment to keeping coastal areas clean, safe, and welcoming.
For locals and visitors, the Blue Flag is a symbol of quality. Whether you’re heading to a quiet cove or a busy marina, Murcia’s coastline is ready to welcome you this summer.
