Torremolinos has established its name as the number one destination for sports tourism on the Costa del Sol, breaking new records in 2025 and showing explosive growth in athletic visitors drawn by its top-flight facilities and the region’s exceptionally mild climate compared to much of Europe.
Last year, the town welcomed 6,444 athletes, an impressive increase of 1,985 from 2024, representing a 44 per cent increase. The influx of sports enthusiasts has driven remarkable economic benefits, with the overall impact from sports tourism soaring 86 per cent to reach €4.4 million, doubling the €2.2 million recorded the previous year.

The number of foreign teams taking advantage of the council sports installations rose 24 per cent to 277 squads, predominantly from European countries and spanning disciplines such as swimming, football, athletics, and multi-sport events. These groups stayed in local hotels throughout the year, generating 34,395 overnight stays, a 28 per cent increase over 2024.
Revenue from renting out municipal sports facilities jumped 45 per cent to €344,651, with the Virgen del Carmen III swimming pool standing out as the most profitable venue.
Football teams also flock to Torremolinos for pre-season and training camps, taking advantage of quality pitches and year-round sunshine.

The town also achieved a historic milestone with over 16,000 registered users accessing sports services throughout 2025. Of these, 9,447 athletes made regular use of the facilities either freely or through guided classes, achieving an outstanding 91 per cent occupancy rate. Additionally, more than 7,000 occasional users accessed the venues via day passes, tickets, or space rentals.
Major investments in infrastructure have supported the transformation. New additions in 2025 included the Javier Imbroda pavilion, the refurbished Francisco de Asís pavilion, a new roof for outdoor multi-sport court number 1, fresh outdoor training centres focused on callisthenics, and the replacement of artificial turf at the José Antonio Gallardo football field.
With continued emphasis on health-focused programmes, such as the highly popular back school, which handled 1,643 appointments, and inclusive access initiatives, Torremolinos is rapidly establishing itself as the go-to sports city of the Costa del Sol, combining elite athletic opportunities with sustainable tourism growth.
