A rare red weather alert has been issued for multiple popular Spanish tourist destinations as heavy rain causes severe flooding in parts of the country. Cars have been left submerged underwater and water is pouring through the building of Ibiza airport and into baggage security areas.
People in Ibiza have been urged to only go out in emergencies while the warning is in place. Tourists are being warned that the torrential rain could cause severe travel disruption to numerous holiday hotspots.
Torrential rain is hitting Ibiza and Formentera on Tuesday, according to the Mirror.
A warning sent out by weather agency Aemet stated: “Torrential rains in Ibiza and Formentera. More than 180 mm in twelve hours. Caution! Extraordinary danger. There may be flooding and sudden rises in waterways. The alert is in effect until 16:00 h.”

Areas of Valencia were flooded overnight, sparking fears of a repeat of last year’s deadly floods which killed 230 people.
National weather agency Aemet kept coastal areas of Valencia province under a red alert for the whole of Monday because of the risk of torrential rain.
The city of GandÃa was among the worst hit municipalities with more than 240 litres or rain per sqm on Monday afternoon and evening, flooding streets and garages.
Ibiza is under under a red warning, the maximum alert level, for heavy rainfall until 4pm local time.
Videos emerging from the Spanish island show dramatic deluges, with streets becoming torrents and water pouring through the roof of Ibiza Airport.
Across the island, some roads have been closed including major highways the E10 and E20, and parents were told not to collect their children from school until the water levels eased.
Warning alerts were sent to people’s phones to alert them about the weather conditions.
It comes as the UK is set for strong winds and heavy rain this weekend as two tropical storms make their way across the Atlantic.
The Met Office is urging the public to keep an eye on the forecast over the coming days as there is a potential that weather warnings could be issued.
