The Generalitat Valenciana will maintain temporary reductions in fares for regional public transport services until 30 June 2026, according to a decree-law published on the last day of 2025 in the Diari Oficial de la Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV). The measure allows the continuation of conditions previously set out in Decree-Law 9/2025, of 25 June.
Which transport services are affected
The reductions apply to transport passes and multi-ride tickets issued by the Metropolitan Transport Authority of Valencia (ATMV), the TAM system in Alicante, and the metropolitan transport network in Castellón, as well as tickets for Metrovalencia and the Alicante TRAM network.
Approved by the Consell plenary, the new decree aims to make public transport more accessible, encourage sustainable mobility, and ease the financial burden on citizens.
Free travel for children and flood-affected areas
Under this extension, temporary free travel for children up to 14 years old will continue, as well as the special transport pass for residents of certain municipalities affected by the October 2024 floods. These passes remain valid until 31 December 2026 without requiring any recharge or update.
The continuation of these discounts is part of the recovery strategy for areas affected by the floods, providing concrete benefits to residents as communities return to normality. In 2025, a total of 222,539 Recuperem València free travel cards were issued, with nearly 19 million validations recorded.
Discounts for youth and multi-ride tickets
Over the next six months, a 50% discount will continue for youth passes, while a 40% reduction will remain for regional multi-ride tickets and subscriptions.
This means that in Valencia, young people can still travel unlimited for a flat rate of €14.90 per month; in Alicante, the 30-trip youth pass will cost €10.60; and in Castellón, the 30-trip Young IVA temporary pass will be €12.75 per month.
Fare structure and national adjustments
The decree also establishes that standard fares for partially or fully discounted tickets will be based on the rates in effect on 31 December 2025 for each origin-destination or zonal combination, or, where not applicable, the single ticket fare.
The decree-law foresees that if the Spanish government approves subsidies for public transport discounts during this extension, regional discounts may be adjusted to comply with national regulations.
Compensation for transport operators
Additionally, the decree regulates compensation to public transport operators for the application of these measures.
The Valencian Community has a well-developed public transport network that connects its major cities and surrounding towns. Metrovalencia serves the city of Valencia and its metropolitan area with a combination of metro and tram lines, while the TRAM network in Alicante links urban and suburban areas. In Castellón, the metropolitan transport system connects the city with nearby municipalities, providing essential mobility for work, education, and leisure.
Importance and usage
Public transport is a key part of promoting sustainable mobility in the region, reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. In recent years, the Generalitat has introduced measures such as fare reductions, free travel for children, and discounted passes for young people to encourage greater use of buses, trams, and trains. These initiatives have helped millions of residents travel affordably while supporting a greener and more accessible transport system.
