The Costa del Sol has just received a red warning for heavy rain, storms and possible snow. Telephones sounded with a loud, repetitive beep at top volume. The warning lists elements to avoid, including going outside and not crossing flooded streets or the flow of floodwaters. If an area is floodable or nearby, it suggests moving to higher ground or moving upstairs where possible. It also suggests checking online recommendations of the emergency services and, in the event of an emergency, calling 112, the EMA emergency number.

Snow lightning, hail and high winds

Snow and hail has already began being a severe problem around La Concha mountain and on the A-397 between Ronda and San Pedro de Alcantara, making transit near impossible. Authorities advise avoiding the area as driving is treacherous and the road will likely be closed at any moment.

Earlier this evening, local authorities issued an Orange Alert for heavy rain with possibilities of flooding. In the last few minutes, that alert has changed to red.

What the phone message said:

Civil Protection Alert. Red alert activated. – In this situation: exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel. Do not cross flood-prone areas and respect traffic closures. Do not carry out activities in or near riverbeds. If you are in a flood-prone area, seek higher ground or go to an upper floor. Consult the recommendations of 112 Extraordinary Risk – due to rain. at: https://lajunta.es/5rolh In case of emergency, call 112 National Alert Network – EMA Emergencies 112.

The warning is justified, since up to 120 litres per square metre are expected to fall in the next twelve hours. The notification has been received by users with mobile devices from 27 municipalities in the province of Malaga, including the capital.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
