The landscape of La Cala de Mijas is set to change with a new above-ground, multi-storey car park along the Bulevar de La Cala. Will it be a welcome relief for those living there or an eyesore?

The facility, one of three new parking projects recently announced by the council, will provide close to 600 parking spaces across two levels, spread over nearly 9,000 square metres. Unlike the underground parking planned for the Las Lagunas areas, this La Cala project is explicitly designed as an above-ground structure, making it a more straightforward and potentially faster build.

Precise location not confirmed – just “El Bulevar”

While the exact plot has not yet been publicly confirmed – as the projects are still in the early stage of drafting construction designs – it is widely expected that the car park will be developed on a currently makeshift parking area adjacent to the sharp curve on the A-7 motorway, near the road tunnel providing access to the Mercadona supermarket. The central location would place it right in the heart of La Cala, convenient for beachgoers, shoppers, and local businesses along the bustling boulevard, but drawing more traffic in the summer.

The announcement forms part of Mijas’ ambitious broader parking strategy, which aims to create around 4,000 new spaces across the town. The La Cala facility, along with underground parking in La Vega (approximately 480 spaces) and another in Las Cañadas (around 280 spaces), will add over 1,000 spaces in total from these three projects alone.

Architectural designs yet to be drawn up

The tender for drafting the detailed construction projects, with a combined budget of around €376,000 for technical studies, was launched on 19 December.

Construction timelines remain tentative at this early phase, but similar council projects suggest that, following project approval and contracting, works could begin in late 2026 or 2027, with completion potentially by 2028 or 2029, depending on the awarding process and any adjustments during design.

Local residents have long complained about parking pressures, especially during peak tourist seasons. The new above-ground car park in La Cala is expected to ease congestion somewhat and support the town’s beachfront and shopping area businesses.

More details, including potential renders and exact site plans, are likely to emerge in the coming months as architects are selected and designs finalised
