Millions of people from the UK jet off to Spain each year
Spanish weather experts have given their official forecast for the country’s summer season, which kicks off today, and it could be bad news for some UK holidaymakers. As per the meteorological calendar, summer starts on Sunday, June 1, with millions of people from across the world expected to jet off to Spain in the coming months.
In an update on X, previously Twitter, Spain’s national weather service AEMET announced its expectation of a “warmer than average” summer throughout Spain, “especially in the Mediterranean area and the archipelagos”. The agency added: “There is no clear trend in rainfall.”
An accompanying graphic in the post indicated a 60-70% likelihood of higher-than-normal temperatures across Spain for the months of June, July, and August. This follows a heatwave that hit Spain at May’s end, with mercury levels nearing 40C, and while many people flock to Spain for its warmer climes, above-average temperatures could actually negatively impact holiday plans.
The UK Foreign Office has advised that “extreme weather can affect many areas of Spain, particularly over the summer months” and recommends that people monitor AEMET and European Meteorological services for any severe weather updates.
It also suggests people follow NHS advice for hot weather, which includes staying inside where possible, especially between 11am and 3pm. The NHS also suggests wearing sunscreen, a hat, light clothing, and refraining from exercise or activities that could increase body temperature.
You can also keep cool by consuming cold food and drinks, or taking a refreshing shower, while avoiding alcohol, caffeine and hot beverages. Another tip is to keep windows shut during the day and open them at night when it’s cooler, along with using electric fans.
