Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) registered the quake

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake has been felt in parts of Malaga province, Spain, this morning. The earthquake was registered at 7.13am in the Mediterranean, in the area of Cabo de Palos, about 70km from Almería.

Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) registered the quake and it has been felt by hundreds of homes. The earthquake has hit areas across southern and eastern Spain. Areas include: Granada, Málaga, Jaén, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete.

According to the IGN, the quake happened at a depth of 3km below ground. After the earthquake, several smaller tremors between 1.9 and 3.4 on the Richter scale have been registered in the same area.

No damage has yet been reported, mainly because the epicenter was far from inhabited areas. However, it is noteworthy that Google’s automatic seismic alert system for Android devices has sent alerts to users in the area.

A tourist has recalled the moment the earthquake hit her home. She told El País: “I was sleeping, and the whole house shook for a few seconds.”

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
