I AM BRITISH, HOW CAN I APPLY FOR SPANISH NATIONALITY? WHICH REQUIREMENTS DO I NEED?
It is a fact that Uk left the European Union last Monday. Thereafter, the Uk will not be a country member of the European Union anymore.
Until 31 December 2020 a transition period has been agreed in order to enable the UK and the European Union to adapt to this new situation.

Faced with this separation, many British citizens residing in Spain are worried about their administrative status and their working and familiar situation after Brexit.
As it was mentionted in other article a few days ago, during this transition, all UK citizens and their families residing in Spain will maintain all the same existing rights and obligations.
Wherefore, a priori, everything remains the same until now, but what will happen after this transition period? What changes will Brexit bring? We cannot know for certain how many changes it will cause and how they will affect UK citizens living abroad.
Getting the Spanish citizenship and the Spanish ID card is the best way for UK citizens to remain in the European Union and to completely ensure the rights of free movement and residence for persons and workers within the UE and the Schengen area.
AS UK CITIZENS, WHICH REQUIREMENTS DO I NEED TO APPLY FOR SPANISH NATIONALITY?
First of all, length of continued legal residence must be taken into account by all foreign citizens interested in applying for Spanish nationality.
For UK citizens, at least 10 years of legal and continuous residence in Spain is compulsorily required at the time of application.
According to the Spanish Civil Code, there are some cases that reduce the necessary length of legal residence to apply for Spanish nationality, for example being married to a Spanish citizen or being the child or grandchild of a originally Spanish citizen. We must evaluate each case individually while taking into account if we can invoke some of the residence reduction period cases.
HOW CAN I PROVE MY RESIDENCE IN SPAIN DURING THE LAST 10 YEARS?
UK citizens must be in possession of the Registration Certificate for UE citizens for at least 10 years prior to the Spanish nationality application.
AS UK CITIZEN, MUST I PASS THE SPANISH NATIONALITY TESTS TO GET SPANISH NATIONALITY?
Yes, you must. If you are not included within one of the cases that exempt you from passing exams, DELE A2 (Spanish language test) and CCSE (constitutional and sociocultural knowledge test) tests are compulsory and you must pass them. For that reason, you must include both approved tests in your Spanish nationality application.
AS UK CITIZENS, WILL MY CRIMINAL AND POLICE RECORDS BE CHECKED?
Of course, as with any other foreign citizens, the Spanish Ministry of Justice will check your criminal and police records before granting your Spanish nationality.
If you have any criminal or police record, it is very important to expunge your criminal and police records before applying for Spanish nationality in order to avoid a document request or, what is worse, the possible denial of your Spanish nationality.
HOW CAN I APPLY FOR SPANISH NATIONALITY?
At present, there are several ways to submit your Spanish nationality application:
- Through the electronic platform of the Spanish Ministry of Justice, known as Plataforma telemática (telematic platform).
- In a Public Registry, including the Registro Electrónico Común and the Registro Electrónico del Ministerio de Justicia (both are electronic registries).
- Through the platforms designed to be used by the Colegio de Abogados (Bar Association), Graduados Sociales (Social Graduates) and Procuradores (Solicitors), etc.
