Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) has suspended train services between Hospital de Villajoyosa and Benidorm sinc November 24 until mid-December due to the final phase of the track doubling and electrification works on Line 1 of the TRAM d’Alacant. The suspension will allow progress on the concluding stage of works that began at the end of 2024 and are scheduled for completion before the year’s end.

Replacement bus service in operation

As an alternative, FGV will operate a replacement bus service with stops at Benidorm, Cala Finestrat, Hospital Vila, Costera Pastor and Creueta, connecting with running trains at Creueta station (towards Luceros) and Benidorm station (towards Dénia). The only stop without service will be Terra Mítica, which will not have a replacement option during this period. Passengers can check timetables and updates at stations and stops, by calling 900 72 04 72, via the official website, or through the TRAM app.

Scope and budget of the project

The works cover 6.23 kilometres of track running through Villajoyosa, Finestrat and Benidorm, including interventions on the existing platform and surrounding areas. The project has a budget of nearly €40 million, funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds.

Major infrastructure improvements

This year, track doubling has been carried out in both infrastructure and superstructure, including the construction of a new viaduct over the Barranco del Murtal, electrification of the section, and improvements to embankments and drainage systems. New safety and communication installations have also been added, along with modifications to signalling and upgrades to power substations to meet network requirements.

Station upgrades and accessibility improvements

The project has also included upgrades to Cala Finestrat and Terra Mítica stations, refurbished to meet modern accessibility and equipment standards. At the Hospital de la Marina Baixa, Hospital Vila station has been fitted with a lift, improving access to the healthcare centre and ensuring compliance with universal accessibility standards.

Enhanced safety and recreational route

Additionally, fencing along the route has been renewed, and the El Moralet path has been extended from the northern car park at Benidorm station to provide a new walking and recreational route alongside the railway infrastructure.

Key transport link for the Costa Blanca

The TRAM d’Alacant plays a vital role in connecting the coastal towns of Villajoyosa, Finestrat and Benidorm, providing residents and visitors with a fast, reliable and sustainable alternative to road travel. By linking major residential areas, hospitals and tourist hotspots, the service helps reduce traffic congestion, lowers emissions and supports the daily mobility needs of thousands of people across the Costa Blanca.

Boosting the local economy and tourism

Beyond daily commuting, the TRAM is essential for the region’s economy, particularly tourism, which is a cornerstone of local prosperity. Efficient rail connections make it easier for visitors to reach beaches, resorts and cultural attractions, while improved accessibility at stations ensures that people of all ages and abilities can travel comfortably. The ongoing investment in infrastructure, safety and accessibility highlights the strategic importance of this transport link for both residents and the wider Valencian community.
