Work has started on demolishing the old shopping galleries next to the Hotel AluaSun Doblemar in La Manga del Mar Menor. The buildings were declared unsafe four years ago, and the San Javier Town Council has now moved to take them down. The demolition is aimed at improving the area’s appearance and making better use of the space for future development.
Mayor José Miguel Luengo said the project continues the town’s ongoing efforts to revitalise key parts of La Manga. “With this work, we continue to restore important areas of La Manga and improve its urban environment,” he said, highlighting the council’s commitment to creating safer and more attractive public spaces.
A history of neglect
The site has been abandoned for years, mirroring the fate of other long-neglected areas in La Manga. The Lagomar Hotel, left in ruins for more than 40 years, was cleared several years ago as part of the council’s broader strategy to modernise the town. These projects demonstrate San Javier’s focus on tackling derelict spaces that have long been eyesores for residents and visitors alike.
“The old shopping galleries were a symbol of urban decay, and it was essential to remove them to make way for new opportunities,” the mayor added. Local residents have welcomed the demolition, noting that the cleared space will improve safety and the overall look of the neighbourhood.
Preparing for future development
Once the demolition is complete, the land will be ready for a new commercial and service project designed to meet the area’s current needs. The council plans to attract businesses that can contribute to the local economy while providing facilities and services for residents and tourists.
Mayor Luengo emphasised that the project is part of a wider effort to create jobs and opportunities in La Manga. “Our goal is to transform neglected areas into spaces that serve the community and strengthen the town’s economy,” he said. The council hopes the redevelopment will encourage more investment in La Manga, boosting both tourism and local commerce.
Part of a larger revitalisation strategy
This demolition forms part of San Javier’s broader strategy to modernise and tidy up its coastal areas. By removing unsafe and abandoned structures, the town aims to create a more welcoming environment for visitors while enhancing the quality of life for residents.
Urban planners have noted that revitalisation projects like this can have a ripple effect, inspiring further improvements across La Manga and neighbouring areas. The council is also working on other initiatives to improve public spaces, enhance safety, and support sustainable growth along the coast.
Next steps for La Manga
With the demolition now underway, La Manga is taking another step toward transforming neglected spaces into functional, attractive areas. Residents and business owners are looking forward to the changes, which promise to bring new energy and opportunities to the town’s urban landscape.
