As October dawns in southern Spain, residents on the Costas and Balearics can look forward to a delightful mix of public holidays and pleasant autumn weather, making it an ideal time for time out between the “gota frias” (autumn storms) and festivities.

The month’s highlight is Spain’s Hispanic Day on Sunday, October 12, celebrating Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. In Andalusia (Malaga and Almeria), this extends to a long weekend with a non-working holiday on Monday, October 13, creating a “puente” (bridge) perfect for parades and family gatherings. The Valencian Community, especially Costa Blanca, adds a regional holiday on October 9, marking the Day of Valencia Region with lively cultural events, particularly in Alicante. No additional local holidays are scheduled in the main cities of Murcia or Palma de Mallorca, but the festive spirit spills over with local fairs and harvest-related celebrations.

Despite occasional storms October on the Costas brings fine weather

Weather-wise, October 2025 promises mild, sunny days across the regions, transitioning from summer’s warmth to autumn’s coolness. Early October brings average highs of 25-26°C and lows of 16-19°C, with Almeria enjoying the driest conditions and Murcia the warmest inland evenings.

By late October, average temperatures dip to 21-22°C highs and 13-16°C lows, with Mallorca and Costa Blanca seeing a slight uptick in scattered showers (10-20 per cent chance). So, it’ll be time to dust off the duvet. Sea temperatures remain inviting at between 19 and 23°C, ideal for beach outings in Malaga or Mallorca. Long-range forecasts from AccuWeather suggest above-average warmth early on, with 6–8 hours of daily sunshine.

Travellers should pack light layers for cooler evenings and check local calendars for events like Almeria’s almond festivals or Murcia’s wine harvest festivities, which make the most of the cultural tapestry. For precise updates, consult AEMET or local council websites. October in southern Spain brings a little holiday cheer with comfortable weather with intermittent storms, which invite everyone to enjoy the outdoors while we can before winter arrives.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.
